Corporate responsibility and the environment
Good corporate citizenship is a matter of honour for Nokian Tyres. As a socially responsible corporation, we make sure that we do not harm the environment or people with our actions. Instead, we strive to promote the well-being of both. We emphasise the quality and safety of our products, and we are a forerunner of environmental issues in our sector. We strive to support well-being at work by means of a zero-accident principle. In addition to meeting the requirements of the authorities, we wish to predict the expectations of all interest groups and voluntarily develop our business.
Corporate responsibility in environmental issues means using safe, environmentally-friendly products and efficient, top-of-the-line production processes. In accordance with the product lifecycle thinking, Nokian Tyres pays attention to environmental issues already when acquiring raw materials and designing products. We also take care of our share in tyre recycling. Nokian Tyres is involved in the tyre recycling company Suomen Rengaskierrätys Oy. The company takes care of the collecting and recycling of used tyres in all of Finland.
In the environmental and safety activities, Nokian Tyres has, by and large, been able to put the principles of continuous improvement into effect in accordance with the international ISO 14001 environmental standard and the decree governing the principles of safety management (59/1999). Although legislation has become increasingly restrictive, emissions have remained within the permitted limits and odour emissions from the factory have been kept in check. No noise emissions have been observed. We have been able to significantly reduce our total VOC emissions, but there still lie challenges in implementing the directive.
We emphasise the reduction of waste when developing our processes, and we stress the significance of projects aiming at reducing waste. We effectively utilise the created waste by returning it back to the production process. We strive for a high utilisation rate for waste that cannot be recycled within our facility. We have reached excellent results here.
Appreciation of the environment and safety are natural parts of our product development philosophy, focusing on sustainable safety. For example, we have been able to continuously improve the driving safety of tyres by means of development actions, and we have significantly improved environmental friendliness of the products by developing rolling resistance. At the same time, long-term development work in order to find safer and more environmentally friendly chemicals has enabled us to abandon all agents classified as toxic (T, T+) in our production processes; as far as we know, we are the only company in our field to have achieved this. The quality of our products is guaranteed by the joint ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certificates of the Nokia and Vsevolozhsk plants.
The number of accidents within our company has decreased, but we still have work ahead of us before we reach our objective of zero accidents. We have stressed safety at work connected with pressurising tyres in our Vianor business. The Finnish Vianor was a forerunner in a project that evolved into the first sector-based occupational safety card – the Tyre Safety Card. Good starting points for safety at work in the Vsevolozhsk plant were created by constructing a new plant building and by installing top-notch Western machinery.
